“Don’t Have Feelings.”
How This Message Can Silence You ~ and How You Can Feel and Heal

I recently had an interesting exchange with my husband. We were preparing for a trip, a family wedding, and I just had this ‘feeling’ that our flight could be delayed or even cancelled. Just a feeling.
Interestingly enough, the response I received was, “Don’t Have Feelings”.
Hmmm, my face looked intrigued as it so often does, and I replied, “thank you, another great blog to write!”😅
For many women, especially in midlife, emotional strength wasn’t defined by resilience ~ it was defined by quiet.
We learned early:
“Don’t cry.”
“Don’t make it a thing.”
“Don’t be so sensitive.”
“Tone it down.”
“Don’t take it personally.”
And somewhere inside those messages, we heard something deeper:
“Don’t have feelings.”
Not because others were cruel ~ but because they were taught the same thing. Generations of women learned that emotions were messy, unwanted, inconvenient. Something to manage privately, or better yet, not at all.
So we learned to swallow our truth.
We learned to take care of everyone else first.
We learned to smile through discomfort and cope in silence.
And we called it strength.
But Silence Isn’t Strength ~ Suppression Is Survival
There’s a difference between strength and shutdown.
Shutting down is what we do when we believe we will not be heard, valued, or held.
Women don't numb because they don’t feel.
They numb because they feel deeply ~ and weren’t given space to.
So feelings go underground, and they don’t disappear. They surface as:
Exhaustion
Irritability
Withdrawal
Burnout
“I’m fine.” when we’re not
Holding everything together until we collapse behind closed doors
These aren’t flaws. They’re symptoms of emotional muscle memory ~ the body remembering how to survive in a world that taught us not to need anything.
We Don’t Need Permission ~ We Need Practice
Healing isn’t about suddenly expressing everything loudly.
Healing is relearning (hello new neural pathways!); relearning the new path to come home to ourselves.
It may sound like:
“I’m feeling something ~ and that’s okay.”
It may look like:
Naming what we feel without self-judgment
Asking for support without apologizing (can you imagine?🤯)
Letting our bodies rest before breaking
Crying if we need to ~ without shame 🥹
Saying no without explaining why👈
It begins quietly. With one honest breath. One moment of letting our truth live in the open.
Feeling Isn’t Weakness ~ It’s Wisdom
Emotions are not the problem.
The absence of space for them is. Repeat this to yourself again
Your sadness speaks.
Your anger protects.
Your anxiety alerts.
Your joy guides.
Your grief honors what mattered.
Feelings don’t make us unstable ~ they make us human.
They are your intelligence.
Information.
Invitation.
And for women who have spent decades holding everything together, embracing emotion is not breaking down ~
It is breaking free.
A New Kind of Strength
True strength isn’t silence. True strength is presence.
It's knowing you can feel deeply and still stand.
Still breathe.
Still choose.
Still rise.
It is reclaiming emotional space we were taught not to occupy.
And it starts the moment we whisper:
“My feelings matter ~ and so do I.”
💗Because you do. And your truth doesn’t need permission to exist.
